You’ve officially ordered your dream dress, you know exactly how you’ll wear your hair, and you’ve already purchased the perfect pair of shoes for your Big Day. The only thing left to worry about? Wedding skin prep! Oftentimes, we focus so much on on our day-of digs, hair, and makeup, that we neglect to think about the foundation of it all: our skin. Today, then, we’re so excited to have seasoned beauty pro Laura Garcia of La Di Da Beauty on the blog to talk her top tips for wedding skin prep. From Steven Tyler to renowned wedding dress designer Hayley Paige, Laura and her dream team have been tapped as the go-to beauty gurus for celebrities and fashion icons alike. So her advice, as you can imagine, is worth its weight in gold. Read on for her top tips for ensuring your skin is prepped and ready to glow for your walk down the aisle:
From airbrushing to the latest-and-greatest foundation from Giorgio Armani, Tarte, Chanel, or Bobbi Brown, brides often turn to us as their pros for delivering beautiful, flawless skin for their wedding-day photos. However, they often don’t realize flawless skin starts way before we ever select the perfect foundation—which is why one of the best things about hiring a pro artist for your wedding day makeup is the expert advice they give you even before your big day. After years (and years) of experience, I’ve come to realize there are four key pillars to glowing skin: diet, professional services, the products you use at home, and sun exposure (spoiler alert: it’s about far more than just wearing sunscreen). Below are the top tips I share with my brides-to-be for each category!
1. Be smart about diet.
This concept is nothing new. Most brides know that our diet affects our skin (it is, after all, our largest organ); however, when we have the skin-and-diet conversation with our brides, one of the things we hear most often is that they haven't given it enough time to reap the reward. (It takes patience, people!) They'll tell us they've cut gluten out for a month and it didn't do anything to their skin, so they started eating it again. The same goes for dairy—brides drop it from their diet for a few weeks, and then give up after they don’t see an immediate benefit. BUT, keep it mind it can take up to four whole months to see the pay-off. That’s 16 weeks sans ice-cream or pasta (or whatever the culprit may be), but, man, is it worth it! Clearing breakouts, relieving dryness, and alleviating redness are just a few of the amazing results you can get by simply changing your diet. (We recommend checking out our La Di Da Beauty post on diet and skin to learn more.) If you’re really dedicated to having glowing skin for that walk down the aisle, we recommend making smart diet choices in the months leading up to your wedding.
PRO TIP: Missed the beat? Not to worry. Even if your wedding is only weeks away, there’s one major change you can make that will make a huge difference on your big day: cut out salt. (Sorry, margarita lovers.) Skipping the salt for a few weeks (or even days) prior to your wedding will ensure your skin isn’t swollen on the day-of.
2. Invest in professional services.
Have you built your wedding budget yet? Make sure to leave room for skincare! Plan on getting facials regularly, and do your research on our three faves—microneedling, lasers, and dermaplaning. Microneedling (also known as "collagen induction therapy") involves using fine needles to create hundreds of tiny, invisible puncture wounds in the top layer of skin. This minimally invasive treatment can be done in-office by a trained aesthetician, dermatologist, or plastic surgeon (leave the at-home options for after the wedding). It's virtually painless and incredibly effective at stimulating the body's natural wound healing processes, resulting in cell turnover and increased collagen and elastin production, therefore reversing and preventing signs of aging. It can also help with acne scars, sun damage, pigmentation, and those pesky large pores. It also helps your skin products penetrate better, which leads us right into our next topic: your at-home skin care products.
3. Choose great at-home products.
Having a skincare routine is not enough. It's important to make sure you're using the right products for your skin. And be sure you pay attention to what’s in the products you're using. Our new favorite skincare line obsession: Sorella Apothecary. At La Di Da, we’re known for being particular about our products, but, after tons of research, we chose to offer Sorella Apothecary at our salon because it's everything we've been wanting in a skin care line: it's gluten-free, uses high quality ingredients, is made in small batches, is reasonably priced and it looks so good on our shelves (so we know you'll love how beautiful it looks in your bathroom). Our brand favorites? Orange You Jelly Cleanser (a great daily cleanser), Watermelon Mint Hydrating Mist (can be used over or under makeup and as a daily toner), Daily Greens Moisturizer (an amazing daily moisturizer made with superfoods, paraben free, and it works great under makeup), and The Balm (yes it's really the bomb! It’s our favorite night time cream to lather your skin with moisturize. Plus, it also helps with fine lines).
4. Get proactive about sun protection.
From daily moisturizers to foundations, most of us are already wearing an SPF regularly (yay, progress!). However, something we coach our brides on is the idea of being more intentional. Hopefully, the SPF in your foundation is doing its job. But don't forget to put SPF on your scalp, your hairline, and your ears (especially if you're planning on that perfect updo). Also, don't forget to manage those tan lines in the summer (hello, backless dress)—and take care to use SPF on your neck and decollete so that your skin in that area is just as picture-perfect as your face.
Overall, the best piece of advice I can offer brides-to-be is this: be as proactive about your skincare as you are about planning your wedding. That perfect bridal skin doesn’t come from waking up so in love that your skin gloriously glows (sorry, fairy tales)—it comes from months and months of dedication to diet, professional services, product choice, and smart sun protection. (Trust us: we wish it were easier, too!) Great skin takes work, people, but believe us when we say it is so worth it!
