Both discouraged by love and bullied by well intentioned friends to give online dating a try, it was match.com that initiated a long distance connection between Mikie and Mark. With Mikie living in Chicago and Mark in England, what started as a decidely impractical and challenging long distance relationship turned into something far greater then either of them could have ever imagined. Three years, thousands of frequent flier miles, a proposal, a move to a new country, two houses, two visas, a work permit and house renovation later, they were finally married in a beautiful and heartfelt Napa Valley wedding.
Mikie and Mark fell in love with Napa Valley's Carneros Inn. It's perfect balance of rustic-charm and modern luxury was the ideal fit for the intimate, casual-chic wedding they had in mind.
One of the bride's best friends orchestrated a heartfelt and touching ceremony that was woven from sweet sentiments and precious insights gained from interviews of the couples's friends and family members, including the bride's parents, married for 40 years, and the groom's mom, married to the groom's late father for 30. The ceremony also included sentiments and well wishes from dear friends who weren't able to attend the wedding, and a poetry reading on love and marriage, written by the bride's namesake, her Aunt Mikie.
Family members and close friends, who also happened to be professional musicians, performed for the ceremony. The wedding party walked down the aisle to Air on the G String, a classic Bach, while The Prince of Denmark's March (commonly known as the "Trumpet Voluntary") played as the Bride and her father walked down the aisle.
The couple walked back down the aisle as newlyweds to "With Verdure Glad", by Joseph Haydn, also performed by the Bride's family members.
The Event Design
Intimate and gorgeous, no detail was overlooked. The couple chose a rich color palette of magenta, plum, and wine to accent a color scheme of champagne and capri blue, and the bride's twin sister, a seasoned event professional, in collaboration with close friend and floral designer, Yvonne Chapman of Yvonne Design, created a beautiful setting filled with sophisticated and intimate rustic charm.
The First Dance
Mikie and Mark chose "Only You" by The Platters as their first dance. Their selection paid tribute to the groom's childhood memory of his parents dancing to this very special song.
The most memorable moments were wrapped up in the many ways the couple's love and dedication to friends and family played out throughout the wedding. Moment by moment was made even more memorable because of the many efforts of the couple's closest friends and family made to create the most memorable and unique day for Mikie and Mark.
To round out the evening, the couple took a moment to retreat to the pool just outside of the reception location, to light and set afloat a paper lantern, in honor of Mark's father, who passed away ten years earlier and was greatly missed.
