Carolyn and Ian met on a blind date in Los Angeles and began their "very LA courtship" with tacos, hiking in Griffith Park, and being stuck in traffic. Adventurers by nature who love to camp and hike, they knew they wanted to tie the knot in an outdoor setting. In search of the perfect wedding venue, Carolyn took Ian for a walk at the Los Angeles County Arboretum & Botanic Garden, where she grew up playing among the orange grove and peacocks, and "it just felt right." They loved the location for its 19th Century Los Angeles feel, with shaggy palm trees and mountain views, and modernist architecture.

On the wedding day, guests were picked up from the hotel and transported to the wedding in a school bus. The couple exchanged vows in the intimate Rose Garden where they stood on Ian's grandfather's rug as a remembrance, just as two geese flew overhead to honor "a union of two souls." The reception followed on the outdoor garden terrace of the Peacock Cafe. Invitations by Shannon Losorelli-Doronio and Jay Doronio of Parallel-Play were inspired by LA's Rancho Era, and featured orange groves and envelope liners based on the lace on Carolyn's custom gown from Judy Berberian. It was important to Carolyn and Ian that their guests all felt like they were included in the wedding party, so in lieu of having attendants, Carolyn honored each of her 130 guests with handmade friendship bracelets for the women and boutonnieres for the men, designed with billy buttons, guinea fowl (which live in the arboretum), and rooster feathers.
